Web Hosting Made Simple

by Tem Balanco

Web hosts store your site on a computer with Internet access. When potential visitors are browsing online, they can then visit your site. This computer, known as a server, is similar in many ways to your home computer, but is put to specific uses by the web hosting company. The primary function of a server is to serve web sites, hence the name.

Web hosts usually host thousands of websites, using many servers, and typically have very fast connections to the Internet. Basically, they function by renting out space to users who want users to be able to access their websites through the World Wide Web.

Many of the larger web hosting companies directly own their own batch of hosting servers. Some of the smaller companies will rent a server from the larger ones, then market that same space under their own company name. In these situations, the web host manages your account holdings on the server, but is, in fact, renting the server space from a different company altogether.

There are a variety of setups for website hosting, any of which might suit your website depending on your specific requirements and budget. Bandwidth is always given in terms of a monthly limit either of MB or GB. The bandwidth given is the amount of data that you can actually transfer from the hosting server that houses your site, to the individual computer browser of the user viewing your site.

If you go over the limit, then either you will have to be an extra fee, or your website will not be available. The amount of bandwidth you use is obviously related to the amount of traffic that you receive.

There are some web-hosting companies that offer unlimited bandwidth. This sounds like an amazing deal. The truth is that this is nothing but a lie and you should steer clear of web hosting companies that offer unlimited bandwidth. Bandwidth is a commodity that costs the web hosting company money- unlimited bandwidth is not only impossible, but would cost an unlimited amount of money. Finding the right web hosting company should be your primary plan.

Web hosts generally have high connection speeds to the web, and can host thousands of sites on several servers. The web host rents out their web space to users so that you can publish your own website on the internet. There are a large variety of web hosting plans which are all designed upon the needs of your website and your budget requirements. Bandwidth is always a factor and will be limited. Plainly spoken, the bandwidth limit is the amount of data that can be moved from the web server where your site is hosted, to the browser of the surfer currently looking through your website.
